Education

Whether we are calling it training or teaching what it boils down to is that both you and your dog need help communicating with each other. In fact the best results I have had when working with the dogs is when a dog has been taught well (and in English* helps) from an early age, dealing with an educated dog is much closer to that of a stranger.

*It really is important. Even the tone of a language can really affect a dog's attention and happiness, just like humans. It's easier, relaxing to hear the language of your mind.

I have been lucky enough to have traveled in my life, crucially though I have been able to live where I have visited. It has often been the case that english was completely unused, although in time any language can be learnt initially communication between different human cultures can be broken down and simplified, to that of talking to a stranger.

When you start to view your dogs in this way and do so everyday, then you will start to see improvements. It's not for everyone, so it's not for every dog, but it could be you and yours.

Canine Standards

The following descriptions of dogs is only meant as a glossary of terms so we can more easily discuss your dog with me.

Basic 1

At this level of training I am looking for the most basic of concepts.

They need to "House trained" this includes understanding:

  • Where to pee/poop
  • Not to go on tables
  • Not to chew on cables, carpets, curtains
  • Noise aware (doorbell exception)
  • Stair capable or taught not to try

Either on leash and comfortable with the leash, possibly off leashed in certain controlled environments.

Basic 2

A basic level of training, listening to simple commands:
Come, Sit, Stay, etc.

They can be off-leashed in most areas, comfortable with other dogs, they have been well socialized.

It's hard to be out with the dogs and not do this, so it is included.

Easy Dog

Here your dog is quite easy, they can be off-leashed everywhere (some exceptions), they listen completely (95%), comfortable with all dogs or with standing with me, never pulls on a leash, barks carefully and not inside, doorbells/fireworks are of little to no concern.
You get the idea, this dog is just chill and at this point I am happy to offer a discount .

Socially Anxious

These are dogs that cannot be left in the house alone they will at best make a LOT of noise and at worst start destroying what they can.

Extreme Social Anxiety

These are dogs that cannot be in a room without a human or they will get aggressive, loud and/or cause destruction.

 Off Leash Walking

Walking alongside the walker and paying attention there are 3 sorts of off leash walking:

  1. Heel - The dog is just in front of you at the edge of peripheral vision, but focused on you. When you stop walking they stop, generally acting as though they are on a short leash.

  2. Near - Equivalent of an extendable leash, they can run around nearby, but staying within a rough circle of 5-10m.

  3. Free - Loose and crazy, do as they want.

Other than these basics, what a dog is capable of is quite a range from always listening, playing fetch (with ball return) and much much more. Here is an amazing video of what a dog can do:

More than just tricks though engaging with your dog and learning how they think as you teach them how you think is really useful tool for all involved.

Generally my process for training a dog is to see what the dog can do alone for a few times then I would want to do some more one on one sessions with you to help you understand how to get what you want from your companion.
