De HONDENBUS - Transporting dogs

Since I started working with the dogs the issue of how to get them from their homes (or mine) to a park.

It has been quite a journey and one far from over given the unreliability of v4, here is some of that experience:

Before the Hondenbus

Although in the beginning I did let some dogs jump in my normal bike box it quickly became apparent that a more stable environment was needed.

As such my first bakfiets was purchased.

Hondenbus v1

Christiania

Although relatively unheard of outside of the Netherlands, the Bakfiets, is a commonplace item here.

So shortly after I pivoted into helping dogs I bought a cheap secondhand 3 wheeler on marketplace for about €250.

After a few months I painted it and applied a stencil (poorly - the words were never very clear), although the bright green was a nice sight to see each day.

It was small and bumpy, but the dogs generally got along and with some foam the bottom it was acceptable around town.
I did have some issues building the fence with about 5 different attempts made before finally buying a bench with the same dimensions and then pulling it apart to build cage (even with a door).
Although with a slowly failing tyre that needed to be pumped up each day, the lack of an electric engine made this an exhausting vehicle to ride and I would often fall asleep within minutes of getting home.
So after about 2 years of this version I decided to upgrade to a newer model, alas I made a mistake: the Vogue Troy

Vogue Troy

This bakfiets was slightly larger than the Christiania, however the main focus with this version was the electric engine to help push us along.

With business picking up you can see that the box was often very full both on love and dogs, some dogs made it full just alone.

The vehicle was a terrible choice, poorly made and in need of constant repairs, towards the end it was popping 2-3 spokes every week.

Whilst it was a needed stepping stone I do wish I had skipped this one.

Hondenbus v3

FietsFabriek KDV-XL

Of all the dog transport I have used this has been the best.

Although technically I never owned it, the wonderful former owners of Fietsfabriek leased me their floor model to try out for a month or two. Although it immediately broke, they assured me this was unusual for the model and suggested I used it for much longer to reassure myself, with the intent to buy one.
As such it was never really mine, so I never branded it or built a proper "box" for the dogs. This meant "seatbelts" had to be used for all dogs, both in case of jumping out but also in case of hard braking.
The box was very spacious, even when it was very full and I never had a single issue with the bike.

It was by far and above the best of the Bakfiets I have had yet.
This durable and comfortable bike was pleasant to ride and suffered no mechanical issues in the months I used it.
This was such an odd situation, having spoken at length with the fabulous people at FietsFabriek about my ongoing repair issues with my Troy. They gave me a great deal of experience and confidence in the company and the product, but when time came for me to confirm an order they refused to sell me one.
The company had changed hands a few months previously, which had lead to some tension as the new owners didn't know why I had one of their bikes.
However the decision to refuse me the purchasing of a vehicle has always baffled me, so with little to no other choice on the market at that time.
I went ahead with the Urban Arrow Tender.

Hondenbus v4

Urban Arrow Tender 1500

This is my current version I am using, it is a huge bike at over 3m long and 1.5m wide, it is quite a ridiculous size for a bike, weighs a lot too.

Here I have another electric engine, but a heavy duty one, which has functioned quite well over the last few years. Although not without any mechanical issue the rear wheel that came with the bike was a joke. Designed for a normal bike it completely mismatched the indestructible front end and meant that I became completely unreliable for any daily pickups.
It has become clear that this too will only be a stepping stone.

With the base selected and secured with the help of Fietslease Holland, now I needed to find a way to carry the dogs.

I reached out to a local business (Kelders Kooien) who had made something similar in the past and although the design process was difficult and secretive they produced something that at least functions and you can see here.
It is an all weather vehicle, cool in summer and at least wind and rain proof, if not necessarily "warm" in winter.
The biggest problem with the box is that it hides the dogs too well, and looks too much like a prison, I do hope to find some way to open it up and get it fully branded but as of yet....

Hondenbus v5

I am open to ideas and concepts, I have no current plans to change what I have. However the current version has quite a few failings that I would be eager to solve and I often daydream about simply explaining all the issues I have to someone who can modify the current one or create a new solution. If you think you can help, contact me and let me know!
